What is GPS Time?
GPS time counts continuous SI seconds since January 6, 1980, 00:00:00 UTC, broadcast by GPS satellites for navigation. Unlike UTC, it never inserts leap seconds — it just keeps counting.
Because UTC has had leap seconds added since 1980, GPS time has drifted ahead of UTC by a fixed amount: currently 18 seconds, unchanged since the last leap second on December 31, 2016.
- Epoch: January 6, 1980, 00:00:00 UTC
- No leap seconds — a continuous, uniform count
- Currently 18 seconds ahead of UTC
- Used internally by GPS/GNSS receivers and navigation systems
GPS Time Offset
The 18-second offset accounts for all leap seconds inserted into UTC since the GPS epoch.
How many seconds is GPS time ahead of UTC?
As of 2026, GPS time is 18 seconds ahead of UTC. This offset has been fixed since the last leap second was added to UTC on December 31, 2016, and would only change if a future leap second is announced.
